The History of Calvary Baptist Academy

Calvary Baptist Academy was begun in 1969 by Dr. W. D. "Step" Martin as a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church. As the pastor, his vision was to provide a quality education at an affordable price in a distinctively Christian environment. The school initially included kindergarten through sixth grades. The Junior High grades soon followed. The ninth grade class was started in 1976 with a complete High School in 1977. Calvary Baptist Academy enjoyed a successful decade beginning in the late 1970's, both academically and athletically, before socioeconomic challenges required it to close the high school in 1987. Ten graduating classes and over 200 graduating seniors had gone on to successful secondary education or the work place.

The following decade and a half saw continued growth in the elementary and middle school areas despite a fluctuating economy. A well-rounded, spiritually-equipped and academically superior student body has continued to graduate from the middle school and fill accelerated magnet programs throughout the city.

Shortly after itís closing in 1987, the question of re-opening the High School was continually asked. The demand for a quality Christian education in a safe environment has led to a resurgence of interest from parents, alumni, and graduating middle school students. People seeking a fresh alternative to current educational options have turned to a proven leader in Christian education. Under the leadership of Pastor Rick Edmonds, Calvary Baptist Academy, with over thirty years experience and a proven track record of educational excellence, re-opened itís High School in the fall of 2003 with the ninth grade class. It was time for Calvary Baptist Academy and High School to re-establish itself as a premier center for academic, spiritual, and athletic learning.

Under the supervision of our Superintendent, Mr. Ed Hearron and Principal,Rhonda Honea, approval by the Louisiana State Board of Education was secured in the fall of 2003. In August, 2004, one year after reopening the high school, all grades 9 Ė 12 were included. For the 2004-2005 year, there were over 800 students enrolled in the K-5 through Grade 12 program. A graduating class of 12 students received diplomas in May 2005. Enrollment for the 2005-2006 school year to exceed 900 students and produced 25 graduating seniors. The 2006 enrolment is 1020 and includes a senior class of 39. Projections for 2007 exceed 1100 and has landed the Cavaliers in District 1-AA.

Calvary Baptist Academy offers a college preparatory curriculum. All courses required for participation in the Louisiana TOPS (Tuition Opportunity Program for Students) program are offered as well as multiple electives, extracurricular activities and a full complement of menís and womenís varsity athletics.

Under the direction of Athletic Director Johnny Booty, Calvary Baptist Academyís application for participation in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) was accepted for the fall of 2005. The Cavaliers had a 4-6 record in the 2004 football season prior to entering LHSAA competition.

Prior to the beginning of the 2005 season, Calvary Baptist Academy hired former Green Bay Packers quarterback Doug Pederson to be their Head Football Coach. In the fall of 2005, the Cavaliers participated in the LHSAA District 1-A which is loaded with perrineal powerhouses. Coach Pederson and his staff led the Cavaliers to a 5-6 record in his first year at the helm. His team made it into the LHSAA State Football Playoffs, but lost in the first round.

Coach Pederson is excited about the future of CBA athletics. Retiring from a 13 year career as an NFL quarterback, Coach Pederson has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program.

Head Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director, Coach Chan Hearron began the varsity basketball program with a young, but promising squad. Success was also evident at the middle school and elementary levels with both middle school and elementary boysí teams winning the City Championships.

Varsity Baseball, under first year coach, Rodney Traweek, saw immediate success on the diamond, winning the District Championship and finishing second in the State after losing in the Championship game of the post season state tournament. Continued success is expected as the majority of players were underclassman with remaining years of eligibility.

Nationally recognized Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Merry has implemented a vigorous year-round weight training program for all middle school and varsity athletes. Maleís and femaleís both benefit from the Bigger, Faster, Stronger Program and Speed, Agility and Quickness training. Coach Merry also coached both the Menís and Womenís Varsity Track team with many athletes recording winning times in various events.

Varsity Girlís athletics stormed onto the scene with Coach Lindsay Sanders instituting her brand of girls softball. Coach Greg Smith heads the Varsity Girls Basketball program implementing an aggressive attack.

A full complement of varsity athletics is planned for the future. A Varsity Golf team led by Coach Rusty Ward begins in 2007 and will be the recipient of many members of the City Champion Middle School Golf Team of 2006. Varsity Soccer for both boy and girls will begin the winter of 2007 and Varsity Wrestling in the winter of 2008.

As athletic programs grow, so must facilities. Calvary Baptist Academy has recently constructed a new 2800 seat football stadium, a new varsity boys baseball stadium and a new girls softball stadium. Plans have been unvieled for a new 15,000 square foot athletic complex/field house for training of all athletes, both male and female. Plans also exist for installation of FieldTurf in Cavalier Stadium for the upcoming 2007 season.

With our dream having become a reality, we possess a vision for an even greater tomorrow, while remaining committed to our mission to glorify our Lord in a Christ-centered, Bible-focused, educational environment and to provide a quality college preparatory education at an affordable price.
